Montgomery County Council Approves Viva White Oak Development District

Last week, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved the Viva White Oak Development District, unlocking new opportunities for housing, jobs, innovation, and investment in our community. Located adjacent to the FDA headquarters and near Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center, Viva White Oak is approved for more than 12 million square feet of mixed-use development. The Viva White Oak site is a $2.8 billion investment featuring more than 3 million square feet of lab space, office/medical office, retail, and up to 5,000 quality residences. With a strategic focus on the life sciences and biohealth industries, Viva White Oak stands out with the promise to expand the already significant life sciences cluster in the County and is anticipated to create at least 9,000 jobs.
Once completed, the project will add significant new capacity for life sciences and related industries, while also bringing housing and amenities to the eastern part of the county. The project will be transformational for the east region of the county and is expected to create at least 9,000 jobs.
As Viva White Oak moves forward, it represents one of the largest development opportunities in Montgomery County in recent years. With its scale, location, and focus on life sciences, healthcare, and mixed-use growth, the project is positioned to shape the future of East County and strengthen the region’s role as a hub for innovation and employment.
