Climate Intelligence Leader Vaisala Xweather Opens New Office In Montgomery County, MD

Last week, global leader in weather, environmental, and climate intelligence Vaisala Xweather celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Montgomery County and Maryland State officials, the Mayor of Gaithersburg, the Finnish Ambassador to the United States Leena-Kaisa Mikkola, alongside members of the company’s executive leadership team. Its new location in Gaithersburg, MD, is located at the RIO Lakefront and is in the same building as clean energy giant X-energy.

Vaisala launched Vaisala Xweather, a suite of services providing real-time and hyperlocal weather and environmental data to predict and solve weather challenges, in September 2022. Previously operating largely as a remote workforce, Vaisala Xweather employees will now be based in the company’s new Montgomery County office.

As a Finnish company, Vaisala Xweather’s culture emphasizes people and talent, and Montgomery County’s highly diverse population, and welcoming international community was one of the deciding drivers in setting up here. Its vibrant culture, upscale amenities, and quality of life are often cited by international companies as what makes the County so attractive. In fact, four out of ten of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States are located here —Germantown, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, and Rockville. “What the Mayor, the State, and the County has done is work hard to build a quality of life that has a company from Finland feeling welcome here,” said Judy Costello, Director of Economic Development Special Projects in the office of the County Executive of Montgomery County. That means a lot when Finland has ranked as happiest country for the past eight consecutive years. “Vaisala Xweather is a hidden gem,” added Costello.

Vaisala Xweather’s new office joins a wave of new business openings in Montgomery County. Last week, Volexity signed a new 4,519 square feet lease at Inventa Towers in downtown Silver Spring. The Reston-based company, which had a previous lease in Silver Spring, is a cybersecurity firm specializing in advanced threat intelligence, incident response, and memory forensics.

Additionally, Colorado-based Soar Autism Center leased a 12,799 square feet space, also in the Inventa Towers. This location, the first of Soar Autism’s in the DMV area, will offer comprehensive, play-based therapy for children ages six and younger on the autism spectrum.
