A “People, not Projects” Philosophy is the Hallmark of this Biomedical Research Organization

An impressive 34 scientists supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) have won Nobel prizes for their breakthrough discoveries. That’s one of the many unique accomplishments of this important Montgomery County, Maryland, nonprofit. A biomedical research organization and philanthropy, HHMI has been supporting scientific discoveries since 1953 with a vibrant community of researchers, educators, students and professionals.
HHMI provides broad assistance for the unique missions of its scientists. This attention to research breakthroughs continues to lead to better health, improved quality of life and a more sustainable future. HHMI equips its scientists with the resources, contacts and community needed for breakthrough science. Another hallmark of HHMI is inclusivity, with equity and inclusion at the core of its vision of scientific excellence.
A broad scope of scientific and research breakthroughs
HHMI scientists often collaborate with other researchers around the globe on some of the world’s most vexing problems, including immunology, COVID and cancer. Among the many scientific topics in its portfolio, investigators are looking at long COVID and the effects on patients, and new research to make early detection for lung cancer accessible.
“HHMI is committed to supporting visionary scientists who are pursuing discoveries that will change our world for the better,” says HHMI Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer Leslie Vosshall.
HHMI continues to widen its scope of outreach. It provides opportunities geared toward future scientists in high schools; programs that provide real science, stories and data for instructors; and a production company that crafts immersive films about science and scientists. There are no limitations for the next scientific idea.
Propelling Artificial Intelligence with the launch of AI@HHMI
An exciting recent development is AI@HHMI, a $500 million investment over the next 10 years to support artificial intelligence-driven projects in the life sciences. “By bringing human curiosity and artificial intelligence closer together at every phase of experimentation and data collection, we hope to enable a wide range of scientific breakthroughs at our Janelia Research Campus and HHMI labs throughout the country,” says HHMI President Erin O’Shea.
A “People, not Projects” philosophy
HHMI is well known for its “people, not projects” way of thinking. The nonprofit gives scientists generous, flexible research support for long periods of time, so they can pursue bold ideas and take their science wherever discoveries lead. They also equip them to mentor and train the next generation of research leaders. Following their curiosity and taking research risks has led to important and sometimes unpredictable breakthroughs.
