Montgomery County Celebrates Launch of Bora Pharmaceuticals’ New Biologics Manufacturing Facility in Rockville 

Last week, representatives from the Maryland State Government and Montgomery County, including Maryland Secretary of State Susan Lee, Department of Commerce Secretary Harry Coker Jr., Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, County Council President Natali Fani-González and other local officials joined Bora Biologics to celebrate the opening of its drug substance manufacturing facility in Rockville, Maryland, marking a significant milestone for the County’s life sciences ecosystem and continued growth as a destination for global biopharmaceutical investment.

Bora, a Taiwan-based global pharmaceutical company and contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), established operations in Montgomery County through its acquisition of MacroGenics’ GMP manufacturing operations and biologics manufacturing facility in Rockville. The $122.5 million transaction includes a state-of-the-art biologics manufacturing facility and associated operations that will expand Bora’s U.S. manufacturing footprint and strengthen its end-to-end biologics services platform. The facility includes FDA-approved manufacturing capabilities supporting both clinical and commercial-stage biologics production. The company is retaining the 140 employees who previously worked at the site for MacroGenics and plans to add more jobs and capital investment in the near future.

Bora’s acquisition of MacroGenics follows numerous other recent international investments in Montgomery County. In the last two years, the County has welcomed a growing number of foreign-headquartered life sciences and advanced technology companies seeking to establish or expand U.S. operations, attracted by the County’s highly skilled and diverse workforce, proximity to federal research agencies, and innovation economy.  

This expansion also adds momentum to a growing number of CDMOs operating in Montgomery County. As demand for biologics manufacturing and pharmaceutical supply chain capacity continues to grow, the County has emerged as a leading location for CDMOs supporting the development and commercialization of next-generation therapies.
