Maryland and Montgomery County Poised to Become Quantum Hub

The United Nations declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology and the last several months have proven that Maryland and Montgomery County are setting the pace for the quantum race. In January, Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced a $1 billion investment over the next five years aimed at strengthening Maryland’s position as a quantum technology leader, and as the state’s largest county with a thriving technology sector, Montgomery County is primed to be the epicenter of the “Capital of Quantum.”
Montgomery County is home to several quantum pioneers, including Rockville-based Quantum Space, and Bethesda-based companies Fasoo, Quantum Exchange, and TISTA Science & Technology Corporation. Quantum companies find Montgomery County’s close proximity to federal agencies like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Cybersecurity of Excellence (NCCoE) and abundance of talent—the county boasts more than 29,000 Computer and Mathematics Professionals and 90,000 technology workers—to be a strong strategic advantage.
Additionally, on a recent panel at the Quantum World Congress Conference held in Tysons Corner, Virginia, regional leaders, including MCECD Board Chair Elana Fine, highlighted how important collaboration is across counties to ensure that the Greater Washington Region continues to nurture the area’s expanding quantum ecosystem.
News from Quantum World Congress further solidified Maryland’s commitment to growing its quantum industry. During the event, Governor Moore announced that Microsoft will open a new Quantum Research Center at the University of Maryland’s Discovery District. “In Maryland, we are focused on becoming the future of quantum. Maryland is moving. This is not a fad; this is a consistent thread that we have in our economic growth strategy,” said Moore. “I’m proud to share the momentum that the state of Maryland has. Together we are going to build an amazing legacy.”
With Maryland quickly establishing itself as a leader in quantum, Montgomery County’s business ecosystem, which already supports leading quantum startups, cutting-edge R&D, and international collaboration, stands as a prime location for quantum innovation.
