Advancing STEM Education with KID Museum
For over a decade, Montgomery County nonprofit KID Museum has been providing innovative educational experiences. Founded in 2013, this experiential museum and educational makerspace has been dedicated to transforming how children engage with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.
Through teacher professional development and both in-school and out-of-school programs, KID Museum is reshaping the educational landscape for youth in Montgomery County, Maryland, and beyond.
Engaging the disengaged
KID Museum’s mission is to transform not only what kids learn but how they learn. Their goal is to provide hands-on, project-based learning experiences that connect students to STEM. A cornerstone of their work is engaging populations historically underrepresented in STEM through community and school partnerships.
Recognizing that traditional educational models often fail to engage children and prepare them for future work, KID Museum bridges this gap by equipping youth from diverse backgrounds with creative problem-solving and STEM skills essential for thriving in the future.
In their Latinx Educator Maker Lab, the nonprofit provides professional development for educators serving Latinx students, enhancing their technical skills and equipping them with culturally responsive educational tools.
Maker Girls aims to inspire young women to pursue STEM careers by engaging them in the Invent the Future challenge. Maker Math addresses learning losses from the COVID-19 pandemic, making math enjoyable and improving comprehension and retention through tailored learning experiences.
Leveraging MoCo’s Diversity
KID Museum’s impact model relies heavily on community engagement and collaboration. They partner with research institutions, universities, corporations and local organizations to provide focused opportunities that extend the reach of their programs. Notable partnerships with Boeing, Georgetown University, The Universities at Shady Grove, If/Then and Identity, Inc., have allowed KID Museum to offer unique educational experiences, from exploring cancer prevention to increasing STEM resources for elementary teachers.
Montgomery County’s vibrant and diverse community has been the perfect home for KID Museum. Deep connections with schools, businesses and community organizations have been integral to their success. Despite challenges such as school budget cuts and a difficult fundraising environment, KID Museum remains committed to providing essential programming for students who need it most.
Looking Beyond Local Impact
KID Museum helps foster a diverse talent pipeline not only regionally but nationally, addressing many of the skills gaps faced by employers. Their efforts open doors for personal growth and economic opportunity for youth and families, making a lasting impact on the community.
Over the last decade, they have made a profound impact: More than 400,000 individuals have participated in their research-informed, hands-on learning programs. Impressively, 70% of participants identify as Black or Latino, 65% come from under-resourced communities and 50% participate for free.
These results speak volumes, with 95% of elementary students expressing joy in learning STEM concepts, 65% of middle school students showing interest in STEM careers and 92% improving their critical thinking skills.
As KID Museum celebrates its 10th anniversary, the organization plans to extend their tools, curriculum and teacher training to a national audience. This milestone year is not just a celebration of past achievements but a launchpad for future innovations and a broader impact.
As they look ahead, they envision a future where every young person has access to hands-on, transformational learning experiences that prepare them to solve complex problems. Their long-term goal is to create pathways for all students to engage in meaningful exploration and learning. Visit KID Museum to learn more.
