MCEDC Statement on the Approval of Zoning Text Amendment 21-09 by the Montgomery County Council

The Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) applauds today’s County Council passage of Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) 21-09, which is a local win in innumerable ways.  

The zoning change is another tool in the arsenal for the continued growth and future global competitiveness of the critical Montgomery County, MD life sciences industry sector. 

ZTA 21-09: 

  • Creates a Biohealth Priority Campus which will help the county speed growth of its biohealth facilities to become even more nationally and globally competitive; 
  • Attracts the full spectrum of life sciences industries from R&D through manufacturing and distribution; 
  • Expands the local tax base and draws top talent as companies make large capital investments with custom built facilities;  
  • Addresses the immediate need of more laboratory space to fulfill the demand; and  
  • Streamlines and expedites the zoning, permitting and regulatory processes to reduce barriers.  

Accelerating the process for life sciences companies to physically expand in Montgomery County is a significant strategic priority. For life sciences companies, time is of the essence as they move into clinical trials to improve lives around the world.
