Rockville, Md — Compass Health Center, the leading provider of non-hospital intermediate-level behavioral health services in Illinois, announced plans to open a new location in Silver Spring, Md. in September 2023, marking the company’s first expansion outside of Illinois. The company will bring more than 100 new jobs to the area while helping to address the critical need for additional mental health care services, which is a growing need nationally.

“Montgomery County continues to be a leader on healthcare, so it makes sense that Compass Health Center would eye Montgomery County next as an expansion point,” said County Executive Elrich. “The demand for mental health services continues to grow, and addressing this urgent need locally and throughout the Country is critical. We welcome Compass Health Center to the County.”

MCEDC is helping to facilitate the new location, which consists of over 15,000 sq. ft. at Bournefield Way in Silver Spring. MCEDC is also assisting with permitting, making connections to WorkSource Montgomery for talent needs and additional project support.

“We are pleased to have Compass Health Center join the thriving healthcare ecosystem in Montgomery County,” said Bill Tompkins, President and CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC). “These important services will support Montgomery County and Maryland residents who are living with mental health issues.”

Compass Health Center was co-founded by child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrists, Dr. David Schreiber, MD, and Dr. Claudia Welke, MD. Their unique model of care, grounded in their hospital inpatient experiences, aims to prevent costly and distressing Emergency Room visits and inpatient hospitalizations while providing a more effective level of care.

In Maryland, 781,000 adults struggle with mental health conditions[1], impacting individuals, families, and communities across the state. High school students with depression are over twice as likely to drop out than their peers and 45.5 percent of Marylanders aged 12-17 with depression received no care last year. These statistics reflect our communities’ urgent need for comprehensive mental health care and support.

“Our goal has always been to meet the urgent need for an accessible and specialized care model that addresses the distressing cycle of behavioral health crises,” says Dr. Schreiber, CEO and co-founder of Compass Health Center. “We’re eager to bring our model to Maryland, enhancing access to mental health services and contributing positively to the local economy by creating nearly 100 new jobs.”

In addition to the in-person services in Silver Spring, Compass Health Center is extending its reach throughout Maryland via its virtual services, ensuring high-quality psychiatric and behavioral health care across the state.

Compass Health Center will begin accepting intakes in August 2023, ahead of its September launch. Upon launch, Compass plans to be in network with most commercial insurance carriers.
